Thor Ragnarok – Preview – Will It Live Up To Our Expectations?

Thor Ragnarok – The End Is Here

Things are not well in Asgard as Marvel Cinematic Universe [MCU] gears up for the release of its next big adventure, Thor Ragnarok; and we can’t help but feel a palpable sense of anticipation. The movie, which releases globally on October 25th, might finally be able to do justice to the God of Thunder if the trailer is anything to go by.

As the title suggests, the long-awaited Twilight of the Gods will take centre stage in this edition. Hela, the Asgardian Goddess of Death breaks free from her prison and brings about the prophecy of Ragnarok: the destruction of Asgard and all life on it. The breadth of her power is formidable as she unleashes hell on Asgard and effortlessly manages to smash Mjölnir to smithereens. Thor looks way too easy for Hela and is promptly beaten and banished from his home and ends up in Sakaar, the planet of gladiatorial conflicts. Now he must race against time and find his way back to Asgard to stop Hela from annihilating his home. But first Thor has to fight his way through the gladiatorial arena of the Grandmaster, one of the Elders of the Universe, who has a surprise waiting for him in the form of an old ally – the Hulk!

The movie sets to introduce new characters from the Marvel multiverse who will add to the already impressive roster of MCU. Joining the Odinson in this chapter is his step-brother Loki, his father Odin, his friends Heimdall, Lady Sif, Fandral, Hogun and Volstagg from the previous films, while Hela, the Grandmaster, Surtur, Valkyrie, Korg, Skurge & Topaz will make their debut appearance in the MCU. But, the icing on the cake will be Mark Ruffalo’s angry green behemoth, Hulk, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange.

Thor And His Place At The MCU

The trailer definitely looks promising, and hopefully, the movie will live up to its hype. After all, Thor’s previous standalone movies haven’t been as critically acclaimed as the Iron Man or Captain America trilogy. But, Ragnarok feels different, you can tell.

Also, Thor is left without his beautiful long locks or his trusted hammer. It will be interesting to see where the journey of self-discovery leads the God of Thunder and his posse and how the movie sets up the story for the next big epic from MCU – Avengers: The Infinity War. Also, Director Taika Waititi has promised a journey and an ending for Thor that Marvel can “never go back” from which means we can expect at least one “hero death” in the movie.

It will be fun to watch Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk interact with each other; their dynamic has already left the MCU fans eagerly waiting for more. These two are going to be an awesome team, which is precisely what Thor says he’s putting together to fight Hela since he seemingly can’t defeat her by himself.

Karl Urban as Skurge had me in doubt for a while, but seeing his badassery in the trailer has dispelled any such reservations. Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster are other worthy additions who have the power to light up the screen with their performance. Also, it will be good to see Sir Anthony Hopkins and Edris Elba back in their respective roles as the Allfather Odin and Heimdall. Add Tom Hiddleston’s troublesome Loki to the mix, and we have a fixture that is guaranteed to entertain the masses. And let’s not forget the immortal Stan Lee who, as always, will make a comedic cameo appearance.

Can ‘Thor Ragnarok’ Break The Jinx of Its Movie Franchisee?

Thor Ragnarok
Hela (Cate Blanchett) & Skurge (Karl Urban)

As for Hela, Marvel pulls out all the stops on this one character to ensure that the Goddess of Death challenges Thor and enthrals the audience. And who better to play the part than the legendary Cate Blanchett herself? Pretty much every single shot of Cate Blanchett as Hela looks glorious. Her charismatic persona and her ineffable villainy in the trailer have been well-received by fans, especially the scene where she destroys Thor’s hammer. Thor Ragnarok is destined for greatness – this moment proves it beyond doubt. Will Hela finally be an MCU villain who makes an impact as much as her father, Loki did? We hope so, as all other MCU villains have been close-to-useless plot-devices till now.

After the incredible success of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel has an uphill task of generating the same success with Thor Ragnarok. Looks like Marvel prepares to go all out with what will probably be Thor’s last solo venture.

Oh! And just in case you still need a reason to go see Thor Ragnarok – Hela breaks Mjölnir!!!

’nuff said!
