Justice League : Preview

World’s mightiest superheroes are here! Go grab ur tickets!

The Justice League, DC’s superhero team is the fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe. The DCEU began with Man of Steel in 2013, soon followed by Batman vs Superman: The Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016) and Wonder Woman (2017). Man of Steel, a reboot of the Superman film series, was an origin story that established Superman as Mankind’s protector. Batman vs Superman was largely about the predicaments that pitted the two mighty heroes against each other. Though the idea was a brilliant leaf out of comic books, Zack Snyder’s execution came under fire for its dark, staid and gritty portrayal. ( Don’t start with MARTHA already).

Both the movies had a decent run at the box office and the extended cut of both films was well received by the staunch DC followers. But both films failed to live up to the ridiculous standards set by DC Comics. BVS was soon followed by Suicide Squad, which was a total let down. At this point, Warner Brothers and DCEU were reeling under heavy pressure to deliver.

Wonder Woman was a breath of fresh air into the sullen DCEU. It was lighter, commercial and had Gal Gadot (Oh Yeah !). Such was the impact of the Israeli actress who took the comic world by storm. Wonder Woman was adored by critics and audiences alike and ended up being the highest grossing origin story of all time. Some respite for DC after getting flamboyantly outdone by their counterpart Marvel each time.

Sensing an imminent alien invasion and taking inspiration from Superman’s selfless act for humanity, Batman and Wonder Woman work towards recruiting a group of metahumans to fight an even greater threat. The trailer has given away a tad too much about the storyline and the characters. But DC has assured plenty of surprises in store for the comic fans including the rebirth of Superman, a possible Green Lantern or Deathstroke cameo, among others.

Zach Snyder stepped down during the filming due to personal issues and WB roped in Joss Whedon to complete the film. WB has confirmed reports of multiple reshoots to alter the tone of the film and set things straight from the much-lampooned earlier installments. Though there’s no clear indication of how much Whedon has contributed to the film, the Avengers director is sure to bring in a few quips and lighten the tone of the film.

After having announced a plethora of projects during the comic-con, the future of DCEU rides on the fate of this film.Early reports suggest that redemption is on the cards as Justice League is touted to be a fun ride that should strike a chord with the fans and the neutrals. DC is desperate to prove that Wonder Woman is no flash in the pan and they can consistently mount a challenge to gain a strong foothold in the market. The onus is on World’s mightiest heroes to light up the stage and salvage the franchise. If not, it may sound the death knell for some of DC’s future ventures.
