The Hitman’s Bodyguard – Review – Forgettable Film; Unforgettable Chemistry

The Hitman’s Bodyguard – The Time When Nick Fury Needed Deadpool As A Bodyguard; And Commissioner Jim Gordon Was The Bad Guy!

The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017)

The Hitman's Bodyguard

The Hitman’s Bodyguard is a hilarious screwball action-comedy which promises to be the summer blockbuster of the year. The chemistry between the lead actors, Samuel L. Jackson (Darius Kincaid) and Ryan Reynolds (Michael Bryce), is absolutely brilliant and will leave the audience wanting for more. Add to it the over-the-top action sequences, the relentless car chases in exotic locations and rambunctious dialogues packed with F-bombs – you have an entertainer guaranteed to keep you amused.

To be honest, it’s less Kincaid and Bryce and more Nick Fury and Wade Wilson (the respective Marvel antiheroes they portray in MCU). Reynolds plays his usual self, overflowing with sarcasm while Jackson plays the badass mother*****r swearing at everything and everyone. Basically, they are playing variations of themselves. But, this constant banter between the two is what lights up the screen and leaves the viewer in splits. Frankly, without these two, the movie would be a bigger disappointment than Green Lantern (2011).

This is because, without its two central figures, there is not much else to talk about. The story is nothing innovative; it is a 20-minute skit stretched into a two-hour-long movie with a forgettable plot. The premise is simple – Darius Kincaid is a hitman who has agreed to testify against the ruthless Eastern European dictator Vladislav Dukhovich, portrayed handsomely by the legendary Gary Oldman. To that end, the genocidal Belarusian warlord wants him dead and will do whatever it takes to see to it that Kincaid does not make it to the trial.

To make sure that he does testify, Michael Bryce reluctantly becomes the hitman’s bodyguard, at the insistence of his ex-flame, and escorts him from London to the Hague, encountering difficult obstacles in the way which they must overcome along with their mutual hatred for each other.

Gary Oldman

Along with Jackson & Reynolds, Oldman joins the cast as the baddie while Elodie Yung plays an Interpol operative, the ex-flame of Reynold’s character. Oh! Salma Hayek also joins the mayhem as Jackson’s equally notorious spitfire of a wife. With a competent director, Patrick Hughes, at the helm, The Hitman’s Bodyguard manages to entertain even without a solid script. The story does manage to ask one important question: who is actually evil – he who kills evildoers or he who protects those who commit evil?

The incessant bickering between Jackson and Reynolds is the USP of the film, the only USP, the one thing that saves the film from being a box-office bomb. Watch out for Jackson’s MF bombs laced throughout the movie, delivered with his usual tenacity.

As far as such kinds of movies go, The Hitman’s Bodyguard is quite predictable and, frankly, bland; it’s a standard script with no surprises. However, the ridiculous exchange of jabs between Deadpool and Nick Fury is simply brilliant and is what makes the movie a fun watch!

The Hitman's Bodyguard

This guy single-handedly ruined the word ‘Motherf****r’ – Michael Bryce (Reynolds).
