Watchmen (2018) – TV Series – Nothing Ever Ends, Adrian!

Who Will Watch The Watchmen? No, I’m Not Asking You the Age-old Question of Who Will Guard the Guards; I’m Asking You If You’ll Watch Watchmen, the TV Series Coming out in 2018

Watchmen – TV Series

Watchmen

Remember Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (2009)? Did you know that Michael Bay was approached to direct it initially? Or that Tim Burton was interested in directing the film, with Johnny Depp as The Comedian? Did you know that Snyder made the film after being inspired from the Watchmen miniseries, which aired in 2008? Did you also know that Watchmen is being made into a TV series by HBO? And, did you also know that John Cena is rumoured to play Doctor Manhattan in the TV series?

Yes! As much as I love yanking people’s chains, it’s true! Our favourite vigilante group (after Justice League, Avengers and X-Men, of course) has been given the green light for an HBO TV pilot, under the leadership of Damon Lindelof (Lost, World War Z, Prometheus). Lindelof himself leaked the news via an Instagram image of a Watchmen statue on the desk of the Writers Room. A day later, HBO confirmed the news.

HBO Has Already Started Work On The Watchmen TV Series

Initially, Zack Snyder was supposed to develop the TV series, having previously directed the feature-film adaptation of Alan Moore’s beloved comic series. However, due to unfortunate circumstances (or fortunate, depending on how you see it), Snyder had to leave the project and HBO finally hired Lindelof to create the show for the small screen.

Almost nothing is known about this version of Watchmen, though one can assume that the series will run multiple seasons and would have to expand on events from the comic. That shouldn’t be a major problem as DC Comics launched a number of mini-series (37 issues) in 2012 under the title Before Watchmen, which focused on the title’s individual characters.

Even though the details regarding the cast are still kept under wraps, there are strong whispers that WWE superstar, John Cena, might play Jon Osterman, a.k.a Doctor Manhattan. Taking to his Instagram account, Cena posted not one, but two different graphics relating to Watchmen.

John Cena as Doctor Manhattan? Seriously?

John Cena teasing fans with Watchmen posts

Though John Cena has acted in a few Hollywood films and has some acting chops, but, giving him the lead role in a TV series based on famous a graphic novel is a bit too much, don’t you think? I like John Cena as a wrestler-entertainer; not as an actor.

It is generally known to us nerds that Watchmen creator, Alan Moore, who retired from writing comic books in 2016, preemptively disowns all filmed adaptations of his work, as he sold the movie rights to his first few volumes when he was young and naïve; something he regrets terribly.

Snyder’s Watchmen, produced by Warner Bros. with a $130 million production budget, grossed a disappointing $107.5 million domestically and $185.3 million worldwide. When asked in an interview about Moore’s dismissal of his movie Watchmen (2009) Zack Snyder was quoted as saying “Worst-case scenario – Alan puts the movie on his DVD player on a cold Sunday in London and watches and says, ‘Yeah, that doesn’t suck too bad.‘”

Moore lashed back at Snyder saying, “That’s the worst-case scenario? I think he’s underestimated what the worst case scenario would be… that’s never going to happen in my DVD player in ‘London’. I’m never going to watch this f**king thing.

Good or bad, comic book fans are eagerly waiting for the release of the TV series. Because, at the end of the day, all we can do is wait.

And wait we will.
