2017, like any other year, was filled with both the Good and the Bad, with its fair share of the Ugly. From highly anticipated movies tanking in the Box Office to small budget movies making it big, we at Cinedicted list the worst Bollywood movies of this year.

Some movies were so bad that Critics, Fans and Cinephiles – almost everyone universally vented out their anger over such disastrous films. Presenting the most over-hyped and overrated movies of 2017 (in no particular order):

• Hind Ka Napak Ko Jawab: MSG Lion Heart 2

–> Considering the Baba’s pompous film-making style, one would rather not dare ask or write about the other credits in HKNKJ: MSG LH 2. For, if he had 30 credits to his mighty name for his first film MSG Lionheart, for HKNKJ: MSG LH 2, Baba’s credits stand at 43.

–> Enduring Hind Ka Napak Ko Jawab MSG Lion Heart 2 is an assault on the senses that is far more devastating that India’s surgical strike on Pakistan.

–> While it’s unfair to kill the messenger, ditch this one if you’re possessive about your sanity.

• Tubelight

–> It was horrible, worst possible acting by all of the actors apart from Mr. Om Puri and that guy from the Tanu Weds Manu and the owner of the shop. I just want to kill myself after watching this and the moment on which I decided to watch it! Pathetic, I hate all those messed up people who made this movie and iI so want to use the F word here for the censor board for giving this movie clearance.

–> A very poorly written movie. Could’ve been much much better. Kabir Khan lost his storytelling ability for the first time ever. Salman hasn’t done justice to his character. Apart from Om Puri, Brijendra Kala, Zhu Zhu and some other actors even Sohail Khan and Matin Rey, every actor big or small have portrayed the worst acting skills possible.

–> It was a horrible movie. Too much of melodrama and overacting was there. Storyline and direction was utter rubbish. Only songs were good. All the actors of acting were worst. Accept late star Om Puri’s acting was superb. Utter rubbish movie.

–> What is frustrating about Tubelight is how its director fails to take his concept and turn into a cohesive film.

–> A macho Bollywood star tries on the role of a developmentally disabled man-child. It doesn’t end well.

• Raees

–> The problem is fundamental: the writing is shoddy and unoriginal. And by the time it wades into certain true events, it is left with too little time and meaning. Raees perhaps works only as an SRK showcase. But we’ve seen many of those already.

–> Raees is a sporadically fun, but frequently tedious attempt to reinvigorate the style of films that made Bollywood in the ’80s an exciting place to be.

–> The film is set up so that the superstar shines — except that he doesn’t.

–> The beauty is in the detailing, even if the big picture is banal.

• Sarkar 3

–> Sarkar 3 has the right ideas but it makes a complete mess of its political themes by trying to be quirky for no reason. Had RGV just stuck to intensity and grit, this would’ve been a thrilling comeback for the maverick filmmaker.

–> With Sarkar 3, he once again, misses the bullseye, thanks to a weak script and a poor supporting cast.

–> A film that, like its protagonist, is a mere shadow of its earlier avatars.

–> A soap opera that takes itself far too seriously at all times.

• Judwaa 2

–> Judwaa 2 is a dose of nostalgia that dumbs you down. It exists because of a mass-favourite film made 20 years ago and doesn’t offer anything new to the audience. There is nothing smart about the film, and that’s disappointing. We didn’t go to the theatre expecting intelligent humour, but we didn’t expect a crude and forced comedy either. Things could’ve been much better had the makers been a little awake during the transition of the film industry from 90’s to the teens of the 21st century.

–> There is a host of ensemble actors who add nothing to the film’s humour quotient, and saunters in and out of the screen with no purpose.

–> Everybody in Judwaa 2 overacts, and the dialogues feel like they were written by an adolescent for his high school drama.

–> This is popcorn entertainment at its mindless best.

• Half Girlfriend

–> The movie remains cold and manipulative, and far too heavily dependent on Raju Singh’s swooning soundtrack to suggest emotional depth.

–> Sadly, the film makes a total meal out of the original concept. It’s not even half as good as the book its based on.

–> Half Girlfriend is confused, forced and takes the audience for granted. In one word: disappointing.

• Haseena Parkar

–> Haseena Parkar could have been a real thriller had it been serious about telling a serious story. But it tries to add too much masala and style to the story and serves up absolutely no substance.

–> Haseena Parkar is a film that is more concerned with making money than it is about telling the true story of that rare woman who made it to the top in the underworld.

–> This crime drama fails to offer an insight into Haseena’s life whatsoever as an individual, beyond her infamous identity as Dawood’s sister.

–> Haseena Parkar completely flubs the opportunity to understand how women come to assume positions of power in the underworld.

–> Despite its 124-minute length, Haseena Parkar is a tedious watch. We already know whatever is shown there.

• Raabta

–> The film is a rehash of the many reincarnation stories that have populated the Bollywood romance genre over the years and has nothing new to say.

–> Raabta reincarnates a tried and tested formula without capturing the mystery and sense of aching loss that mark the better entries in the genre.

–> Raabta comes across as a mishmash of a contemporary love story that suddenly changes to an unlikely twist of Game of Thrones.

–> Raabta relies on forced love rather than the force of love.

• OK Jaanu

–> It’s disappointing to see a man of Mani Ratnam’s calibre pen a story that loses its plot as it keeps presenting the same thing over and over again in slightly different settings.

–> Ali has all the elements in place for a breezy ode to young love, but his mechanical approach and miscasting ensure that OK Jaanu is not exactly an okay remake.

–> OK Jaanu isn’t a bad film. It’s just a pointless one. Because an exact — and I mean frame-for-frame — version already exists in Tamil.

–> Do yourself a favour and watch the Tamil version with subtitles, because the Hindi version is a pale imitation.

• Rangoon

–> Rangoon has grandeur but is a lost cause thanks to its multiple threads. Kangana and Shahid, leave a mark with their characters but do not help the film rise above its inconsistencies.

–> While the actors give it their best shot, Rangoon just isn’t able to tell its story with consistency.

–> The 167-minute movie is neither wholly satisfying nor capable of being dismissed entirely.

–> Bollywood’s attempt at a serious wartime romance is something of an ambitious misfire.

–> It may be one of the most awaited films in recent times but Rangoon is a royal misfire.

• Begum Jaan

–> It sounds like a wonderful and welcome alternative to mansplaining – but perhaps it might have been more effective if the movie had opted for subtlety rather than crudeness and the women had been flesh-and-blood rather than paper-thin.

–> The 134-minute long Begum Jaan has Vidya Balan in good form, but it lacks cohesiveness as a complete story. It shies away from delving deep into the theme, but you may appreciate its documentary-like feel.

–> Mukherji doesn’t seem to be able to tie together the twin themes of partition and the exploitation of women.

–> While the movie does get a lot of things right, it just lacks a little conviction in presenting its powerful ideas.

–> Even Vidya Balan cannot rescue Begum Jaan’s loud, empty feminism.

• Aa Gaya Hero

–> Govinda made a comeback in Saif Ali Khan-starrer Happy Ending previously. For Aa Gaya Hero, his fate has been tough since the film found it hard to find distributors.

–> Govinda. the dancing hero, still has the energy and eagerness, but Aa Gaya Hero just makes you wonder Kahan Gaya Hero?

–> If Govinda wants to give Bollywood’s filmmakers a wake-up call, he needs to do a film that showcases his acting talent.

–> Aa Gaya Hero is a testament to why his films may not have worked of late.

• Firangi

–> The family film isn’t really tacky or repulsive, it’s outright boring and that’s probably worse because it’s not even unintentionally entertaining.

–> While these anecdotes could have made for a hilarious, light-hearted movie, the misunderstanding of the profession in the film is appalling.

–> The film careens from one fake crisis to the other.

• Golmaal Again

–> Rohit takes a lot of time to establish this entire set up and there aren’t too many one-liners or jokes to keep you entertained during this period.

–> Shetty’s story doesn’t have the emotional heft or enough jokes to entertain us for 151 minutes – the film’s runtime.

–> Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again is a tawdry film disguised as family entertainment

–> If you are looking for substance, then this one has no logic, only magic.

–> The movie is unbearably loud and self-indulgent.

• Jab Harry Met Sejal

–> In the end, Jab Harry Met Sejal will quite possibly be declared a hit, even if it’s nothing to write home about, simply because SRK stars in it.

–> Watch this film if you are strictly a Shah Rukh Khan or Anushka Sharma fan. Others will hesitate to put a ring on this romantic comedy.

–> It’s a big disappointment to see Shah Rukh Khan returning to his comfort zone and yet not performing on top of his powers.

–> Ideas are too superficially addressed in Jab Harry Met Sejal, a 143-minute tour of Europe, which is 100 minutes too long.

–> This is a film that feels like it was directed on auto-pilot and then left to its own devices.

For other Idiots opposing this Idiot’s view on ‘bad movies’, please understand that earning 100 Crores at the Box Office isn’t what makes a movie great, or even good. For a movie to be good, Box Office numbers don’t mean much (except profit); it’s the content that makes it so. Movies without substance have no place of honour in The Idiot’s Temple of Good Cinema (although they are worshipped by the other Idiots all over the world).

Calling mindless entertainers like Raees or Judwa 2 ‘good cinema’ would be the same as comparing Dilwale to Inception.
