Picking the best or the worst is always subjective, unless you are watching Sachin Tendulkar or Lionel Messi play. This list will be no different. The only difference is that my list, though subjective, has been carefully analysed to contain entries that have high cinematic value – direction, cinematography, screenplay and content, editing and, of course, acting.

There have been many Bollywood movies this year that were universally appreciated, connecting to the audience in a way that only good cinema can. Cinedicted presents the best Bollywood movies of 2017 (in no particular order):

 

A government clerk on election duty in the conflict-ridden jungle of Central India tries his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the apathy of security forces and the looming fear of guerrilla attacks by communist rebels.

Insu, a young Muslim girl, aspires to become a singer but faces restrictions from her conservative father. She happens to cross paths with a musician, which unfolds into an exciting journey.

  • Jolly LLB 2

A lawyer hoodwinks a woman to start his own law firm. However, he feels guilty after he finds out that she committed suicide and her husband was a victim of injustice and tries to make things right.

  • Hindi Medium

Raj and Mita yearn to get Pia, their daughter, educated from a reputed school. When they learn that their background is holding her back, they are willing to go to any lengths to change her fate.

  • An Insignificant Man

Arvind Kejriwal, the head of Aam Admi Party in India, confronts the status quo of corruption in India politics. A non-fiction drama chronicling the most outrageous political debut in the largest democracy in the world, “An Insignificant Man” follows Arvind Kejriwal and his insurgent party as they look to shake up Indian politics while struggling to keep their own idealism alive.

  • Sachin: A Billion Dreams

Sachin: A Billion Dreams is an Indian biographical film based on the life of Indian cricket icon and living legend Sachin Tendulkar. A tale of a restless 10-year-old boy and his journey from watching India’s first World Cup winning skipper Kapil Dev lift the trophy, to the fulfilment of his dream of holding it in his hands for India

  • Lipstick Under My Burkha

In order to be independent and break free from the conservative society, four women set on a journey to discover freedom and happiness.

  • The Ghazi Attack

In 1971, an Indian Naval submarine, S21, intercepts a Pakistani submarine, PNS Ghazi, in its water during a routine surveillance and thwarts its mission of destroying INS Vikrant.

  • Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana

Satyendra aka Sattu (Rajkummar Rao) and Aarti (Kriti Kharbanda) meet for a proposed arranged marriage and fall in love in the process. On the night of their marriage, an unexpected turn of events turns their world upside down. Set in the backdrop of India’s civil services, Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana explores the challenges that Satyendra and Aarti face as a middle-class couple in India.

  • Mom

God could not be everywhere, so he created MOM. Devki, a loving wife and mother of two beautiful daughters, seemingly has a perfect happy family, yet somehow true happiness of being a mother eludes her. An unfortunate incident widens the distance between Arya and Devki, to a point of no return. In such a situation a mother has to make a choice ‘not between’ what is wrong or right’, but between ‘what is wrong and very wrong.”

  • Trapped

Shaurya unintentionally locks himself inside his new house in an uninhabited high-rise, and finds it hard to survive without water, food and electricity.

  • Naam Shabana

This Spin-off from Baby (2015) provides the back-story of intelligence agent Shabana, and chronicles how she becomes a spy. Shabana gets a call offering help avenge Jai’s death provided she agrees to join a secret intelligence agency.

Yogi and Jaya, who have polar opposite personalities and sensibilities, meet via a online dating app. This encounter turns into so much more when the two travel to Rishikesh.

  • Kadvi Hawa

A blind old man and a young bank loan recovery agent, ironically both coming from two extreme weather conditions having zero contribution to the global climate change, fight for their survival.

  • Ajji

Little Manda is found raped and dumped in a trash heap near her slum. Her parents are more concerned with survival than dignity. The cops are powerless to help as the rapist is a local politician’s son. But Ajji won’t accept this injustice.

  • Kaabil

The blissful married lives of Supriya and Rohan, a visually impaired couple, come to a halt when the former is raped by men with political links. When she commits suicide, Rohan vows to take revenge.

  • Toilet – Ek Prem Katha

Keshav falls in love with Jaya and gets married to her. However, she complains that there is no toilet in the house and he tries to pacify her with temporary arrangements.

  • The Song of Scorpions

The Song of Scorpions is the story of a tribal woman Nooran (Golshifteh Farahani) who takes lessons from her grandmother Zubaida (Waheeda Rehman) so as to become a scorpion singer like her. A story of twisted love, revenge and the redemptive power of a song.

  • A Death In The Gunj

When he goes on vacation with his self-involved relatives and family friends, a shy and sensitive university student discovers that there is a heavy price to pay for gentleness.
