Yes, Marvel Is Finally Moving Forward With A Standalone Black Widow Movie and Screenwriter Jeff Schaeffer Has Been Roped In To Write The Script

Black Widow Movie – Yes, its finally happening!

Warner Bros has its own share of problems with DCEU, and writing about it would make for a nice analysis piece, but, the one thing that the studio did right was make a movie involving a female lead. And, that movie (Wonder Woman) has been the only good thing in DCEU so far, its other four films (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and Justice League) were an unbearable mess, hard even for die-hard fans of DC Comics to live with.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, on the other hand, did everything right and fought its way to the top of the food chain becoming the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time. The only major complaint that fans of Marvel Comics had is the studio’s reluctance to give Scarlett Johansson her own standalone Black Widow movie.

Since Black Widow’s debut in Iron Man 2 way back in 2010, fans have been left wondering when they would finally get to watch ScarJo kick some butt in her own movie, if at all. After her appearance in Avengers, the same question was raised again, and asked again when Avengers: Age of Ultron hit theatres.

Scarlett Johansson has Appeared as Black Widow in 5 MCU Films in Supporting Roles, Now She Finally Gets Her Own Solo Movie

Black Widow watched silently as the core members of her team got their own spin-off movies (except Hulk and Hawkeye), and watched some more as some new fringe characters too got their spin-off movies (Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy).

In 2014, Marvel promised its fans that it was working on a solo Black Widow story. Two years later, nothing happened. In 2016, Kevin Feige, president of MCU, once again promised us that they were committed to bringing Natasha Romanoff to the silver screen. Again, two years later, nothing happened. But, now, two more years later, it seems that Marvel has kept its promise and a standalone Black Widow movie is finally happening!

There is no release date for the film or any other information on it, only that the studio had hired Jeff Schaeffer. Schaeffer wrote the Disney short film Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, but broke out with her Black List script, The Shower, a comedy about an alien invasion that takes place during a baby shower. Anne Hathaway, who attached herself to the movie, was so impressed with Schaeffer that she enlisted her help for another one of her movie – Nasty Women, a female-centric take on Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Sources say this is still very early development and the project hasn’t been green-lighted yet. But, it is confirmed that the studio has hired screenwriter Jeff Schaeffer to write the script for the film. Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several candidates before selecting Schaeffer. Also, Marvel executives met with Scarlett Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a “Black Widow” writer.

Scarlett Johansson is set to reprise her role as Black Widow in this summer’s epic – Avengers: Infinity War and will be seen again in Avengers 4. Since Marvel’s Phase Three films currently run through 2019, any Black Widow movie would likely be released after the conclusion of Phase Three.

Marvel refused to comment.
