Netflix has definitely arrived. With acclaimed TV shows like House of Cards, Narcos, Stranger Things, The Crown, Black Mirror, Mindhunter, Orange Is The New Black etc., the streaming giant is undoubtedly the best place to find quality content in this digital age (not counting torrents). It seldom disappoints and rewards its subscribers with good, binge-worthy television. And Netflix has done it again with its new series – The End of the F***ing World!
Most people would be put off with a TV show that has the ‘F-word’ in its title. But, if you don’t let the title deter you from watching it, you will understand why the world is in love with this modern day ‘Bonnie & Clyde’-style romance: it’s a f**king masterpiece!
(Bonnie and Clyde were infamous American criminals who traveled the United States with their gang during the Great Depression, robbing people and killing when cornered or confronted.)
Fun Fact: The End of the F***ing World, which debuted in the UK at the end of last year but has just been made available worldwide via Netflix, has a 100 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The End of the F***ing World – Saying It’s a Masterpiece is an Effing Understatement
The story revolves around two awkward teens who start up an unlikely romance and embark on a road trip across Britain to escape their unhappy home lives. The series jointly follows James (Alex Lawther), a 17-year-old who is believably psychopathic, and Alyssa (Jessica Barden), a rebellious classmate who sees in James a chance to escape from her tumultuous home life.
James, believing he is a psychopath who is unable to feel anything, regularly kills animals as a hobby but has become bored of it. After acquainting himself with Alyssa, a rebellious fellow schoolmate, he decides to murder her. When she asks him to perform cunnlingus, he is ready to use it as an excuse to kill her. But when she asks James to run off with her, he puts off her execution for another time and instead joins her in a road-trip. Slowly, but surely, James falls in love with Alyssa as they share sordid adventures which include: the murder of a serial killer, grand theft auto and the robbery of a gas station.
The character development is truly amazing and doesn’t feel stretched in the least. As the show progresses, we can see the change in James, he becomes more human and less psychopathic, visible in his change of apparel which shows his change in personality – they get lighter which is meant to personify the development of humanity within James.
The End of the Fucking World – Watch It!
As for the cast, there is not a single weak link which can be singled out. Everybody competently does their job of executing their characters to near-perfection. But, the highest praise must be reserved for Lawther and Barden, who, I must say, were impeccable. Both of them did a marvelous job of portraying characters who are detached from basic human feelings that you and I take for granted. Their emotions move between helplessness and adult cynicism with little ease, and that, is really impressive.
Fun Fact: Though they play 17 year olds on the show, stars Jessica Barden and Alex Lawther are actually 25 and 22 years of age respectively.
It’s a modern day ‘Bonnie and Clyde’-esque adventure that gives more than it takes. And even though the story is simple and beautiful, it is one of the best British TV series ever produced. Maybe Sex Pistols wrote their famous song, Anarchy in the U.K, keeping James and Alyssa in mind. And, Anarchy in the U.K never looked more endearing than The End of the F***ing World.
There is little else to be said here. Go watch it; you’ll be duly rewarded for your efforts. And that’s that.
